"We Won the War in Iraq"

Karl Zinmeister, an editor at American Enterprise Online, just returned from a tour of Iraq. This is not his first such tour; he was there in 2003 and 2004. After his latest trip, he is reporting that we won the war in Iraq. How can this be, when thing and people are still blowing up?

It's not as silly as it sounds. We appointed a fixed date when World War II ended for us in Europe, and then in the Pacific - but, at least in Europe, there was violence and death long after that date. In any case, Zinmeister makes a compelling case, and he's seen more of Iraq than most of the rest of us have.

For what it's worth, here is Senator Durbin's public apology for comparing our prison at Guantanamo Bay to the worst, bloodiest horrors of the 20th century. (See also this brief piece of mine herein.) It comes up a little short in detail and sincerity, I think, but it's more of an apology than we've received from Amnesty International, if I'm not mistaken, for a very similar offense.

By the way, on the importance of actually knowing history, see David Gelernter.
