Tuesday, October 4, 2005I Voted. So Should You.I voted this morning at 7:40 a.m., 40 minutes after the polls opened. I was the eighth voter to vote in my precinct. (This is not surprising. It's a local primary election, after all.) This was during a power outage, so I voted by flashlight - which, notably, I could not have done in Farmington, where they're trying out new electronic voting systems. (Please tell me those machines have a hard copy printout for an audit trail! You'd think that would be a given, but it's not.) I am a relatively functional human being, so I did not dangle, dimple, or impregnate any chads. I love technology as much as the next guy, and more than most, but I'm not persuaded that new voting systems by themselves will solve more problems than they create. The punch cards work for me. I'll report results as soon as I have them and can post them here (presumably late this evening). Meanwhile, I predict the winners will be as follows. (Remember, this is the primary, so there are two winners for each open seat. We narrow that to one per seat in November.) For mayor, LeBaron, followed by Thompson. (George Brown out.) For two four-year city council seats: Belmont, Rodeback, Fox, and Cates, in that order. (I'm uncertain about the order, but not the names. Five others out.) For the one two-year, half-term council seat: Gunther will be first, and I'm flipping a coin on second. Let's say Strasburg, on the strength of his ties in the community. (Two others out.) While we wait, see me on why primary elections matter.
